Polycarbonate (PC for short) is a polymer containing carbonate group in the molecular chain. According to the structure of the ester group, it can be divided into aliphatic, aromatic, aliphatic aromatic and other types. The application of aliphatic and aliphatic aromatic polycarbonate in engineering plastics is limited due to their low mechanical properties.

The application of aliphatic and aliphatic aromatic polycarbonate in engineering plastics is limited due to their low mechanical properties.

Polycarbonate is a tough thermoplastic resin, whose name comes from its internal CO3 group. It can be synthesized from bisphenol A and carbon oxychloride (COCl2). Nowadays, the most commonly used method is melt transesterification (synthesis of bisphenol A and diphenyl carbonate through transesterification and polycondensation).

1、 Physical properties

Polycarbonate is colorless, transparent, heat-resistant, impact resistant, flame retardant, BI grade, and has good mechanical properties at ordinary use temperature.

Compared with polymethyl methacrylate, polycarbonate has good impact resistance, high refractive index, and good processing performance. It has UL94 V-0 flame retardancy without additives. However, the price of PMMA is lower than that of polycarbonate, and large devices can be produced by bulk polymerization.

2、 Related reports

China and Saudi Arabia's 260000 t/a polycarbonate project was started in Tianjin Binhai New Area, which is another large-scale petrochemical project jointly constructed by China Petrochemical Corporation and Saudi Basic Industry Corporation in Tianjin after the completion and operation of the 1 million t/a ethylene project.

It is understood that the project covers an area of 67 hectares and is operated by Zhongsha (Tianjin) Petrochemical Co., Ltd. It is mainly to build two 130000 ton/year non phosgene polycarbonate joint production units and supporting utilities and auxiliary facilities, which are expected to be completed and put into operation in 2015. After the completion of the project, four major categories of polycarbonate can be produced, including mixing grade, extrusion grade, optical grade and molding grade.

Prince Saud Bin Sanayyan Al Saud, Chairman of SABIC, said here that the foundation laying of polycarbonate project is an important milestone for SABIC and hopes to improve the economic level of Saudi Arabia and China in scientific and technological research, technology, innovation, engineering and product market through the long-term strategic partnership between China and Saudi Arabia.

Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic engineering material with excellent comprehensive performance, which is used in automobile, household appliances, medical treatment, optics, machinery and other fields, and extended to aerospace, electronics, computer and other high-tech industries.
